Postponed -- Saturday, September 22, 2007
We regret that, due to circumstances
beyond our control, we must postpone the Sept 22, 2007 concert with
Chris Burge, Patrick Tevlin and his New Orleans Rhythm. We will
post the details as soon as we are able to reschedule this event.
In Memoriam: Jacques
Gauthe
We are very sorry to report the untimely passing of Jacques
Gauthe, a popular New Orleans clarinet player who had many friends
in Canada. His last appearance in Toronto was on December 1
of last year at a concert of the Classic Jazz Society of Toronto.
Jacques was one of many musicians who felt the brunt of
Hurricane Katrina. He lost his house and all possessions, fleeing
the city with only his wife, his dog and his instruments. Finding
his way to Texas, he faced very serious surgery and a period of
recuperation from which he recovered. When he visited us last, he
had just just completed a tour of France and was again playing
regularly at Fritzels Pub on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
Originally from Gascony, in the south of France, Jacques fell
in love with the clarinet at a young age. Influenced by his hero
Sidney Bechet, whose style Jacques’ emulated, he started his own
band at age 18 and toured southern France.
Jacques moved to New Orleans in 1968 where he played at
Preservation Hall with the Kid Thomas Band. He formed his own band
The Creole Rice Jazz Band which was the house band at the Meridien
Hotel for many years.
Jacques made over 25 CD’s during his career and played as a
guest artist with bands in Russia, Japan, Denmark, France
Germany, Argentina and Canada as well as throughout the United
States.
He died while on tour in France. Our heartfelt
condolences go to his wife and family. He will be missed by
many here in Toronto.

If you want to continue to receive notice of the
CJST events by Canada Post, call
Colin Robinson at 416-777-9235 or click to send
Colin an e-mail.
It is very costly to do the mailings, and
if you learn of the concerts through other means, let us know so we can
